About Science Translational Medicine

STM

In the last few decades global efforts toward scientific and medical research have been notably successful. The governments of United States and other developed countries provide funding for scientists to investigate fundamental biology and the causes of diseases. The results of this work are published in scientific journals, after undergoing peer review by other scientists. But there is a avast disconnect between these basic biomedical advances reported in the pages of journals and the application of these advances for diagnoses, treatments, and cures. A critical need exists for a forum whereby scientists and physicians from all disciplines can present and analyze the applications of these discoveries. Science Translational Medicine will fill that gap, known by some as “the valley of death”, promoting health by facilitating communication and cooperation among those dedicated to basic, translational, and clinical research and its application.

Translational medicine is an emerging and important new field in science that required collaboration across multiple disciplines. It is the process in which research moves from discoveries in the laboratory to actual clinical applications that will improve human health care around the world.

Science Translational Medicine provides the most current understanding of diverse streams of knowledge and creates new knowledge which has a direct impact on public health.

Basic biomedical research has seen tremendous progress throughout the world in the last few decades. However, as far as the treatment of human disease, progress has not kept pace with that of biomedical research.

By posting critical questions, Science Translational Medicine will help improve the multidirectional process where basic research informs clinical research and clinical research informs basic research. This resource will be the forum where basic and clinical researchers can share their knowledge to help improve human health care.
